Sheikh Russel KC crowned champion

Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra were crowned an unbeaten champion of Bangabandhu Cup Football Tournament on Sunday.Sheikh Russel KC, a renowned football team in the country, clinched the title, beating Bangladesh Navy by 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out at Muktijoddha Asaduzzaman Stadium in Magura.Arup Kumar of Sheikh Russel KC was adjudged the player of the match.
The tournament had 16 teams that were split into four groups with four teams in a group. They played a round robin league format and advanced to the quarters and semis.
There are some teams of Dhaka’s premier clubs like Abahani, Mohammedan, Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra and the Bangladesh Navy.
In the first semifinal on February 9, Mohammedan Sporting Club Ltd edged past Sheikh Russel KC by 7-6 goals in a penalty shoot-out.
Later, Mohammedan got disqualified from their final berth by laws as they played the semifinal against Sheikh Russel with two illegal players.
Footballers Mostafa and Sio Junapio played for Mohammedan in the semifinal whereas they were in a different team for a quarterfinal match in the same tournament.
For breaking the laws, Mohammedan were stripped off their semifinal victory and Sheikh Russel were adjudged the winner by 2-0 goals.
Besides, the defending champion Abahani Limited lost to Bangladesh Navy by 2-1 goals at their second semifinal match in a penalty shoot-out.
State Minister for Youth and Sports Dr. Biren Sikder handed over the trophy to the winners.
Bangladesh Football Federation president Kazi Salahuddin, Prime Minister’s APS Saifuzzaman Shekhor, former legendary footballers Ashraf Hossain Chunnu and Badal Roy, ASP of Magura Tariqul Islam, president of Magura District Awami League Tanzel Hossain Khan, chairman of the District Council Pankaj Kumar Kundu, Mayor of Magura City Corporation Khurshed Haider Tutul, Magura Sadar Upazila chairman Rostam Ali, general secretary of District Sports Council Alhaj Mokbul Hossain, convener of the tournament committee Zillur Rahman Lajuk and president of Asaduzzaman Football Academy Farid Hossain, among others, were present on the occasion.
Addressing the function as chief guest, Dr Biren Sikder said football is the most entertaining game for the people of Bangladesh. The government is taking initiative to establish mini-stadiums at upazila level and develop stadiums in towns.”
“A large part of the work on Magura District Stadium has been completed. I hope that this development will continue in future,” he added.
In his speech, Kazi Salahuddin said, “All the teams competed against each other. It was a full house. The atmosphere was wonderful with so many enthusiastic fans.”
Bashundhara Cement, a sister concern of the country’s largest business conglomerate Bashundhara Group, sponsored the ‘Bangabandhu Cup Football Tournament 2017’.
Asaduzzaman Football Academy of Magura arranged the tournament including 16 teams. Around 20,000 spectators enjoyed the grand finale amid much fanfare.
