Sk Russel reach Independence Cup quarters as group champions

Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra reached the quarterfinals of the 12th Independence Cup 2022 as they emerged unbeaten champions of the four-team Group A.

Sheikh Russel beat Mohammedan Sporting Club by 3-0 goals in their third and last group match at the Sheikh Fazlul Haque Mani Stadium in Gopalganj on Monday.

Ivorian midfielder Kpehi Jean Charles Didier Brossou, forward Mohammad Ibrahim and Nigerian forward Mfon Sunday Udoh scored one goal each for the winners in the 2nd, 51st and 59th minutes.

After the day’s victory, the former champions bagged 7 points from two wins and a draw while their nearest opponents Mohammedan earned 6 points from two wins and a defeat.

Sheikh Russel earlier started their campaign with a 1-1 draw against newcomers Fortis Football Club Ltd but beat Bangladesh Navy Football Team by 2-0 goals in their very next match.

Sheikh Russel have formed a strong 26-member squad with an aim to clinch all major domestic titles this season under the supervision of Bashundhara Group Managing Director and Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra Ltd Chairman Sayem Sobhan Anvir.

In the day’s other match, Fortis FC defeated Bangladesh Navy Football Team by 3-1 goals at the Shaheed Dhirendranath Stadium in Cumilla, but both sides were eliminated from the competition.

Fortis’ Afghan forward Amiruddin Sharifi scored a brace in the 17th and 44th minutes and Brazilian forward Luiz Carlos Junior added one in the 61st minute while Navy’s forward Sakhawat Hossain scored one in the 7th minute.

Fortis earned 4 points from one win, one draw and one defeat while all-looser Navy failed to open their account.

Meanwhile, the Group A champions Sheikh Russel will play against Group B runners-up and Group A runners-up Mohammedan will take on Group B champions in the quarters, both on November 26.

The three-time BPL champions Bashundhara Kings will take on Chattogram Abahoni in a place-deciding match of Group B at the Bir Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Stadium in Munshiganj today.

Both Kings and Ctg Abahnoi earlier reached quarters from Group B with 6 points from two wins each.

In the day’s other match, Azampur Football Club Uttara will play against Fakirapool Young Men’s Club in Cumilla.
