Rana to continue as Sheikh Russel captain

Veteran national goalkeeper Ashraful Islam Rana will lead Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra Ltd in the upcoming edition of the Bangladesh Premier League, scheduled to start in the capital on February 3.

Midfielder Hemanta Vincent Biswas and forward Md Saad Uddin were named as the first and second vice-captains of the club during an emergency meeting of the club’s football standing committee.

The meeting was chaired by the club’s senior vice-chairman and the football standing committee’s vice-chairman Liaquat Ali Khan Mukul at its permanent office in the Bashundhara Residential Area on Saturday.
The committee also thanked Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan and Bashundhara Group Managing Director and Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra Ltd Chairman Sayem Sobhan Anvir for providing the club with a permanent office and a new expensive home venue, Bashundhara Sports Complex.

Sheikh Russel’s director in-charge and the standing committee’s vice-chairman Ismat Jamil Akhond Lavlu, sports director and the standing committee’s member secretary Saleh Zaman Salim, finance director and the standing committee’s first member Md Fakhruddin were also present in the meeting.

The club’s directors and committee members Md Alimuzzaman Khan Alam, Mir Md Shahabuddin Tipu, SM Hassan Zaman, Md Abubakar, Belayet Hossain Bapari, Habibur Rahman Khan Mannu, Hamidul Hoque Shamim, Md Asaduzzaman and the club’s permanent members Aminul Islam and Maruf Kazi and others attended the meeting.

“The club is named after Sheikh Russel who is the youngest brother of our Honourable Prime Minister. We are determined to maintain his reputation so we are taking all activities here seriously,” the club’s senior vice-chairman Mukul said after the meeting.

“Rana has been appointed as the captain of the club. He is a senior player and also led the club earlier, so we have kept faith in him…I think we played very well in the last two competitions but unfortunately failed to earn the titles. The upcoming league will also be challenging but we are mentally ready for taking challenges,” he concluded.
