Shiekh Russell launches TT tournament for children

Sheikh Russell Krira Chakra on Sunday announced to host a School Table Tennis Tournament to celebrate the 52nd birthday of country’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s late son.
The four-day long tournament will get underway from Tuesday, birthday of Russell, who was assassinated by a group of army rebels along with his family members on August 15, 1975.
A total of 260 students, including 25 intellectually disable children, will
participate in the tournament.
Bashundhara Group and Bashundhara Cement will jointly sponsor the tournament that has an estimated budget of Tk 15 lakh.
Participants will compete for seven different events—boys’ singles, boys’ team, girls’ singles, girls’ team, boys’ sub-junior, girls’ sub-junior and autistic singles.
This is for the first time the club is going to host such a tournament for the school students and its chairman Sayem Sobhan Anvir hoped they would continue the initiative.
Anvir, who is also the managing director of Bashundhara Group, also announced to work with the intellectually disabled children having taken inspiration from prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s daughter Saima Wazed Putul.
Saima has been working with this sector for a longtime.
Maruful Islam, director of Sheikh Russell KC, said they are taking this kind of initiative to provideintellectually disable children with some opportunities to play with the other children.
